Abraham Newsom was born in 1964 in the west Texas town of San Angelo. He grew up in Dallas and graduated from W. T. White High School, where he played various musical instruments in many ensembles.
He earned a degree in music education from Angelo State University and a master's degree in bassoon performance from Texas Tech University. Before entering the monastery, he taught all-level music in Marfa and Knox City Texas.
Br. Abraham has been a Benedictine monk at St. Gregory's Abbey since 1992. At the moment, he is the cook and vegetable gardener, as well as editor of the quarterly newsletter.
In his spare time between rounds of work and prayer, he enjoys reading science fiction, long distance bicycle riding, and watching IndyCar races.
